Ennismore Curling Club and Banquet Hall

Our History

The Ennismore Curling Club opened in 1974 when an adventurous group started curling at the Ennismore Hockey Arena. Over the next three years, they developed plans and raised funds for a purpose-built facility which opened in 1977 next door to the hockey arena. That same enterprising year, they registered the Club as a Not-for-Profit Corporation. Tales of those early times are the stuff of legends, probably not exaggerated in some cases. Rosters gradually got larger as did the number of leagues. There were many bonspiels – some went all weekend including through the night (so it is said). That likely isn’t true because no one curls through the night, eh? But it is true that this is Ennismore and people like to have fun with their curling. During the following years, the Directors, supported by very active Club members, were able to bring upgrades to the facilities: insulation in the ice shed, new more efficient lighting in 2010, a new ice plant in 2011 and a $750,000.00 renovation of the building in 2013 that modernized the kitchen, rebuilt the outside facade and made the building more accessible by adding an elevator to the upstairs lounge. In typical fashion, Club members did a lot of the work and raised a large amount of the money. The Club contribution was supplemented by funds from Federal granting programs and Selwyn Township, who have always been supportive of the Club. In fact, it is worth noting that through expertise among the members, the Club has been very successful in gaining support from not only Federal and Selwyn programs but Trillium and others awards, as well. By 2014, when the Club hosted the Travelers Senior Men’s and Women’s Provincial Championships, the updated facilities provided an appealing welcome wholly in character with the well-known warmth of the members of the Club itself. Following that, the Club grew in membership and level of activity. In some years there were as many as fourteen bonspiels drawing from across the Province as well as the ECC membership, an amazing number for such a small rural Club. Then came the COVID years, which as elsewhere curtailed activities. But, like the Phoenix, the ECC has risen again and currently offers more than ten leagues, nine bonspiels including a Doubles get-together, and a variety of programs for schools and curlers of all ages and skill level. Needless to say about an Ennismore organization, the social side of curling is well filled out.
