Winnies Winter Warm up November 13, 2019

___

The Ennismore Curling Club (ECC) was founded in 1974. The curling season runs from October through March each year. During this time there are a number of leagues and many tournaments ("bonspiels"). There are plenty of opportunities for you to come out to participate, compete, or just watch the action. We have an up and coming Youth league complete with light rocks for our youngest curlers, an amazing learn to curl programs to get you started at any age and stage, and opportunities for community partnerships and outreach through our Charity Bonspiels, as well as instruction programs with students from various schools.

The club facility is available for rentals throughout the curling season as well as summer for weddings and other social events. There is a full bar and hall on the premises that can be rented for curling which makes a great corporate outing!

No matter what your interest, come on down to the ECC and check out our sport and our facility.

Results from the Robert Young Construction Bonspiel -

March 6th saw a great day of curling  as our ladies league played host to a number of different clubs in our Robert Young Construction Bonspiel.
At the end of the day it was the team of Mary Ellen Bannon, Marina Wheeler, Wendy Stamplecoskie and Freda Latour from Peterborough Curling Club taking top prize.

The top winner on the opposite draw was our own Sherri Jopling with Sara Marshall, Niki Julian and Pat McLean.

A fun day was had by all thanks to the hard work of conveners Judy Schramyr and Louise Martin and their committee. In addition to good curling and good fun, participants were treated to a beautiful meal prepared by Annette and Steve Thomson with the help of kitchen captain Marilyn Smith.

Replacement of ECC’s “Retiring” Treasurer

After serving as Treasurer for the Ennismore Curling Club for going on nineteen years, Wayne Stafford has notified the Board of Directors that it is time for him to step aside and let someone else take over.

Wayne has done a remarkable job as our Treasurer, and has been a huge factor in bringing the Club to where it is today.  We owe Wayne our deepest appreciation for all that he has done.

With his resignation as Treasurer, the Board will need to replace both the day to day accounting work as well as the financial oversight a Treasurer provides to any organization. We may or may not have one club member qualified to fill both roles. If not, the position may be split among two or more individuals.

Wayne has ensured the Board of his intent to provide a smooth and effective transition. He will continue through year end including our AGM in June, and will be available to mentor/ assist a new treasurer with the various responsibilities.

We need one or more ECC members to lead our financial management in the future.

Let’s talk! Please contact Murray Skinner (email: mandjskinner@gmail.com, phone 705-652-7973), Dick Plant (email: rplant@nexicom.net, phone 705-292-5478), or any board member.

Each year our Club makes a “Volunteer of the Year” award which recognizes service to the Club much beyond the normal. In the past, the award has gone to one person or to more than one in the same year, as the names on the “Volunteer” plaque in the downstairs lobby show. The award is administered by the Board, who are now asking for nominations.

ECC members can nominate any other member (or members) whom they deem worthy of the award. Nominations must include a brief description of why the person (or persons) is being nominated.

Nominations open on March 18, 2019 and must be submitted by April 22, 2019.

On May 1 the list of finalists will be presented to the membership for a vote. Voting will be open from May 1 to May 31. The Award winner(s) will be announced at the AGM in June.

Nominations can be sent by email to mandjskinner@gmail.com or given in hard copy to any board member. All nominations will be kept confidential. Nomination forms can be printed off by following this link, Using the PDF as a guide for information to email in, or pick up a paper copy at the club.

The Ennismore Curling Club is conducting a survey of members regarding our Bonspiels.

Whether or not you participate in our bonspiels, we would appreciate your input and comments.

Bonspiels help keep our club operating. Without bonspiels, annual dues would be approximately $80 more per member. The Board of Directors is seeking information to help determine the future of our bonspiels… How many should we hold annually? What types? How can we make them better?

For this year, new bonspiel conveners took over three of our spiels, including the (new) Doubles, Closing Spiel and Chicken Spiel.  For 2019/20 we are in need of some new conveners. Would you consider being a bonspiel convener?

Our bonspiel survey form is available for download here, or blank copies are available to pick up at the club. You can deposit completed surveys in the “Completed Bonspiel Surveys” box at the bar, or hand your completed survey to any member of the Board of Directors.

Please submit your completed questionnaire no later than March 23, 2019

We held The Curlers Care Fun Bonspiel in support of Soldier On Saturday, Feb 23 rd

Sgt James McIntyre, the Ontario representative from Soldier On, accepted the total donation of $15,000.
Funds were raised through donations from the curlers and their supporters, corporate sponsors, a silent
auction as well as contributions towards dinner from local organizations and the donation of lunch by
Jesse’s Tap and Grill. The overall winners of the bonspiel were the Ennismore Curling club’s team of
Peter Gardner, Michael Gallagher, Erika Gallagher and Tammy Sprenger. First on the opposite draw was
Jim Watson’s team followed by Wayne Stafford’s and Doug Edmondson’s teams.
The bonspiel raised funds to support the critical work Soldier On does for the Canadian Armed Force’s
physically injured or mentally ill veterans and currently serving members. A full compliment of 64
curlers, both seasoned and first timers, took to the ice in two six end games. After the completion of
the curling games an official ceremony was held to honour those who have, or are serving, in the
Canadian Armed Forces. The ceremony included a colour party from the Lakefield Legion, Sophia Hiles a
piper with the Hastings Prince Edward Army Cadets, speeches from Andy Mitchell Mayor of Selwyn
township, Lesley Parnell Peterborough councillor, Curve Lake elder Keith Knott, special guest elder
Murray Whetung who is the last surviving Curve Lake WW2 veteran, and messages from Dave Smith
MPP and Maryam Monsef MP.
Bonspiel chair Sharon Stafford and her organizing committee would like to thank all the curlers,
corporate sponsors and the many organizations who contributed to the bonspiel.

The 12th annual Curl for a Cause held on Feb. 9 was an amazing success. The big winner of the day was PARD, Peterborough area’s therapeutic horseback riding group that provides rehabilitation for adults and children who suffer from physical and mental disabilities. We donated a record amount of $6000 from our silent auction and raffle items bringing our grand total to  our community caues to $39,000!  In addition we contributed approximately $3000 to our club bringing this total to $24000.  WOW – what an accomplishment.

Congratulations to the Marshall/Plant team of Jason, Leigh and Sara Marshall skipped by Richard Plant who were the overall winners followed closely by Jim Watson’s team who came first on the second draw. Other winners were Angie Muir’s team from PARD, Ray Lalonde from Tam Heather, and the Sinclair, Ciceri and Ryan Antonpulos teams from Ennismore.

A special thanks to all the curlers, sponsors and volunteers who contributed to this wonderful day

- Susan Plant and Sharon Stafford, bonspiel conveners

Our 2018 Curl for a Cause dollars are already  hard at work. The Osprey viewing platform at Ennismore Waterfront Park has been refurbished. If you haven’t been there – follow the walking trail from the grassy section of the park.  You can check out the memorial gardens at the same time. Thanks to Mike Richardson for putting our donation to a good use and sending the photo. Mike advises this is just a start of the local trail work using our $5000 Curl for a Cause donation.

ECC Recognition by Ennismore Horticultural Society

A dedication service was held on June 10 at the new memorial garden at Ennismore Waterfront Park. This garden was made possible from several donations and hardworking volunteers.
